NC films have a hard time finding theatrical distribution much of the time, and few retail outlets will carry AO games. The Hatred team seemed a bit surprised with the AO, as one dev said on their forums :. Even if this violence isn't really that bad and this harsh language isn't overused.

During the '90s, concerned citizens and news outlets turned their attention to video games. Obviously, the responsibility of monitoring the impressionable youth could not possibly fall on the parents' shoulders; as a result, the Entertainment Software Rating Board rose up to carry the burden. A non-profit self-regulatory organization, the ESRB is a necessary thing that helped ease some of the scrutiny leveled at the industry.
Back in June, Valve announced that it was no longer going to police what could and couldn't appear on Steam, removing games only if they were illegal or "straight-up trolling. Hatred is in fact the third game to receive an AO rating for violence alone, with both Thrill Kill and Manhunt 2 also receiving that evaluation. Thrill Killhowever, had its release cancelled after Electronic Arts bought its publisher and objected to its content. The AO rating has significant implications for the game's release.
