An anal fissure is a tear in the skin around the opening for bowel movements, also known as the anus or rectal area. Nitroglycerin belongs to the group of medicines called nitrates.
An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the lower rectum anal canal that causes pain during bowel movements. Anal fissures don't lead to more serious problems. Most anal fissures heal with home treatment after a few days or weeks.
No laboratory tests are indicated at this time. A majority of anal fissures heal on their own, and no treatment is needed. If treatment is necessary, the goal is to relieve pain and constipation.
Previous reports have suggested initial efficacy in the treatment of anal fissures. The aim of this study was to assess the longer-term usefulness of this treatment.
